Florence Anova Smith Rice, 95, of Frederick, MD, passed away on June 26, 2018. Born December 19, 1922 in Johnsville, MD. She was a daughter to the late John L. and Jesse Smith (nee Kershaw). She was also the beloved wife to the late Lewis Albert “Bud” Rice.
Florence graduated from Frederick High School and went on to join the United States Marine Corp. She worked for the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases and United States Army Medical Materiel Agency at Fort Detrick as a civilian. She also worked for Nikirk, Nikirk, and Nikirk lawyers, The Frederick County Sheriff’s Department, and the American Legion. Florence would become an lifetime honorary lifelong member of the American Legion.
Florence was an avid bowler at Terrace Lanes, enjoyed caring for and maintaining her garden, and was a member of Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ.
She is survived by her son Steven Lee Rice, her siblings; Paul Smith and Cora Knight, she is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her siblings; Albert L. Smith, Samuel L. Smith, Winfield Smith, John H. Smith, Elizabeth Myers, and Mary Whitmore.
The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, July 1, 2018, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 2, 2018. Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Frederick.
