Sandra Anne Thomas

April 30, 1935 — May 9, 2018

Sandra A. Basford Thomas, passed peacefully in her home, with her husband of 62 years, Maynard Thomas, daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and James Doll, and daughter, DejaBarbara Thomas on Wednesday, May 9, 2018. She was born April 30, 1935 and is pre-deceased by two sisters, Regina and Virginia, as well as her parents George and June Basford. She will be fondly remembered as a celebrated basketball player for the Middletown High School girls’ team, graduating in 1953. She was a most valuable player on the Frederick Girls Softball league, playing left-field for many years. Sandy was also a member of teams at the Village Lanes, bowling in both mixed and women’s leagues with her dear friend Ann Clark. Sandy was also proficient at trout fishing, mushroom hunting, gardening, and followed the Baltimore Orioles. Sandy worshipped the sun and her traveling companion Maynard. Together, they traveled the Caribbean and Mexico with friends.Sandy’s greatest happiness came from her four grandchildren Colin, Cadence, Insley and Ianna. She was always available to care for them, read books, force naps, take them to the farm, teach them about flowers and wildlife, and attend their activities as a cheering squad. She wept when they won or lost, and sat in the scorching heat of a stadium or pool deck, or the freezing A/C of a dance theater without complaint, wanting only to see the moment of her grandchild’s glory in the spotlight. Colin Doll and wife, Danielle Grooms, reside in Frederick. Cadence Doll resides in Southern California. Insley Smullen lives in Savannah, GA. Her sister, Ianna S. Little and her husband, David, have settled in Leland, NC. Deja Thomas, Michelle, and James Doll remain in Frederick. Sandra is a long-time member of St. John’s Catholic Church where memorial services will be held on Monday, May 14, at 10 am. Visitors will be received at Keeney & Bassford Funeral Home, Sunday from 4:00-7:00. A reception will be held at the Elks Lodge #684 at 12:00.
