Doris Jean Remsberg Ifert, 89, of Jefferson, passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2018, at her home, surrounded by family. She was the loving wife of 67 years to David E. Ifert. They were married in 1950. Doris was born on October 1, 1928, on the family farm " The Merry Midnight", and had many fond memories of growing up in Lander. Doris was the daughter of Norman Sebastian and Alice Naomi Gross Remsberg. Following graduation from Frederick High School in 1945, she started working as a secretary at Potomac Edison and moved on to work for Frederick County Public Schools, having worked at the old Jefferson Elementary, Middletown Elementary and Middletown High School and retired in 1989. Doris was an active member of the Jefferson United Church of Christ for 76 years. She sang in the church choir for several years and also organized and directed the JUCC Band. She loved to sing, was known for her angelic soprano voice, and sang for many weddings and funerals. She was also a member of the Sweet Adelines Chorus along with two quartets, The Honeybees and Four from the Heart. She was a longtime member of the Jefferson Grange, the DAR, Frederick and Middletown Historical Societies and served as docent at Lockhouse 29 on the C&O Canal. Genealogy was a passion for Doris and she did much research and documentation of her families. Doris was quite the homemaker: sewing, quilting, needlepoint work, canning and freezing fruits and vegetables from the garden, and known for her candies and coconut pound cake. Enjoying traveling, she made several trips to Europe with an infatuation for Oberammergau. Other favorites were the Holy Land, London, and Hawaii. She also enjoyed family trips to the beach. Being a huge Orioles fan, she attended several games and enjoyed watching them on TV. Playing softball, roller skating, riding the roller coaster at Hershey Park, playing 500, and bowling were favorite activities for Doris over the years. She grew and maintained a beautiful rose garden for many years. Surviving in addition to her husband are her three children, Kathy M. Walters and husband Bill, of Verona, VA, Linda Sue Ifert, of Leesburg, VA and Perry E. Ifert and wife Terry, of Jefferson, five grandchildren, Jessica Pamdeth and husband Robin, Annie Main and husband Joe, Jeremy Nee and wife Maria, Sam Walters and friend Donna, and Liz Routzahn and husband Darin, five great grandchildren, Olivia, Katherine, Sarah, Rachel and Ezekiel, her dog Emily, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty N. Grove and husband Richard, Barbara R, Gwinn and husband Darrel, and a nephew, Rick Grove.The family wants to express special thanks to Sherri Duvall for her endless devotion and compassion and to the Hospice team for their exceptional support and guidance.In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to Cure Alzheimer's Fund, 34 Washington St., Suite 200, Wellesley Hills, MA 02481 and Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Friends will be received on Sunday, January 21, 2018, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. The funeral will be held at the Jefferson United Church of Christ, 3837 Jefferson Pike, Jefferson on Monday, January 22, 2018, at 11 a.m., Pastor Guy Wenck will officiate.
