John E. Wisner, age 88 of Frederick passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at Kline Hospice House in Mt. Airy. He is survived by his wife Betsy L. Wisner who he was married to for 25 years. Born on March 16, 1929 in Frederick, he was the son of the late Franklin H. and Ida Wisner. John is preceded in death by his daughter Kathy Kinnaman, his grandson Stephen A. Wisner, and brothers Paul Wisner and James Wisner.
John was a graduate of Frederick High School in the class of 1947. While in high school he starred on the football team, and later played for both the Seneca football team and the VFW semiprofessional team. Following high school, he served in the United States Army at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds. A proud man who believed in hard work. John’s first employment led him to construction jobs most notability with Ausherman Construction. He then worked at Fort Detrick for the majority of his working career, working as an operating engineer from 1953 to 1986. He also worked installing carpet for both Clines Furniture Store and Sears as well as for local residents.
After retirement, John placed “for sale” signs at houses for realtors in the local region. It was his passion and honor to be a volunteer firefighter and he became a life member at both the Independent Hose Company and the Citizens Truck Company here in Frederick. In his free time, he enjoyed antique sales.
Mr. Wisner was a member at the Frederick Church of the Brethren and also more recently attended the Fredericktowne Baptist Church in Walkersville.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Wisner is also survived by his children, John E. Wisner, Jr. of Raleigh, NC, Stephen J. Wisner and wife Connie of Frederick, Donald F. Wisner and wife Hwa Chin of Frederick, Rhonda L. Wisner of Hagerstown, and Cynthia K. MacMullen and husband Robert of Middletown; his grandchildren, Kristy Nelson, Robert W. Wisner, Diana Wisner, Hellen Frank, Alicia Wisner, Kevin Shafer, Thomas MacMullen, and Erin MacMullen; and his 8 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Charles "Buck" Wisner of Frederick.
A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, November 3, 2017 at 2 PM at the Fredericktowne Baptist Church, 8645 Biggs Ford Road, Walkersville, MD 21793. The interment will be private.
