Mr. Dorsey Franklin Shipley, Jr., 81, of Middletown, passed away on Thursday, June 8, 2017, at Homewood at Crumland Farms surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Mildred Virginia Zimmerman Shipley, his wife of 60 years. Born in Frederick on March 3, 1936, he was a son of the late Dorsey F. Shipley, Sr., and Evon Ponton Shipley Alban.
He attended Frederick High School and remained a devoted member of the class of 1954. Dorsey graduated high school from Charlotte Hall Academy. After high school, he attended Virginia Military Institute and served in the United States Air Force at Langley. Later in life, Dorsey attended and graduated from Shepherd University. He became an Air Traffic Controller where he served at Boston and Washing ton Centers for 25 years. In retirement, he served as judge of the Orphan’s Court of Frederick County and enjoyed being a tour guide for Frederick City. He later reentered the work force and worked at AOPA Air Safety Foundation for ten years. Some of Dorsey’s favorite joys were flying his Cessna and playing tennis. At the age of 79, Dorsey completed one of his life-long dreams by skydiving. Dorsey will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and his love of airplanes and aviation. Dorsey belonged to Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frederick. He was a member of the Elks Club, Francis Scott Key American Legion, Amvets Post 9 and Catoctin Club.
In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter Susan Kreiger and husband Fred, of Hagerstown, son Gregg Shipley and wife Michelle, of Middletown and daughter Lori Shipley, of Mt. Airy, brother's Dennis Alban, of Costa Rica, Scott Shipley, and wife Louise, a sister Ann Shipley Adams and husband Ric and sister-in-law, Carole Larkin and husband Warren all of Frederick. He is also survived by six grandchildren Christopher Condon and wife Aimee, Fred Kreiger III and wife Samantha, Erin Conto and husband Pete, Jessica Condon, Caroline Kreiger, and Joshua Shipley and two great grandchildren, Gabriel Michael Condon and Kenley Conto, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Brad Alban.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m., on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, 31 East Church Street, Frederick. Deacon Michael O'Donnell, will officiate. Interment will be in the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
