Mrs. Charlotte Geraldine (Austin) Crum, 90, of Frederick, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Monday, June 5, 2017 with her Son, Daughter-in-Law and Grandchildren by her side. She was preceded in death by her husband Wayne Byron "Buddy" Crum, who died just 22 days prior on May 14, 2017. In Feb. 2017, they celebrated 71 yrs. of marriage. Two brothers, Karl T. Austin and William F. Austin, and two sisters, Ruby Bell Austin and Carmen Topper also preceded her in death.
Born October 2, 1926, in Keysville, MD, she was the daughter of the late Upton L. and Carrie V. Austin.
Charlotte is survived by her son, Brian "Todd" Crum and wife Donna, of Frederick. Grandchildren, Bradley Crum and Emily Lopez (Jason Miller), both of Frederick. A Great-Granddaughter, Naomi P. Miller, of Frederick. A Brother, Melvin Austin of Westminster, MD, Four Sister-in-Laws, Helen Hubbard of Hagerstown, MD, Betty Austin of Taneytown, Marty Austin of Emmitsburg, MD, and Nancy Austin of Westminster, MD, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Charlotte only completed the 8th grade because she was needed at home to care for younger siblings.
For many years, Charlotte was employed at the Blue Ridge Rubber Company, Taneytown, MD. After becoming a mother, Charlotte became a homemaker. She also worked part time for the Frederick County Board of Education in the cafeteria at Waverley Elementary School until her retirement in the early 1980's.
Growing up Charlotte was quite the athlete. She excelled in track and field, volleyball in school, and played on several women's softball teams in the Taneytown area where she lived.
She, along with her husband, were avid duckpin bowlers, bowling in Taneytown, Westminster, Union Bridge, Walkersville, Baltimore and Frederick. Charlotte was considered one of the top female duckpin bowlers in the area for many years. She was a member of a professional women's duckpin league that traveled all over the Western Maryland and Baltimore area. Charlotte enjoyed working in ceramics. She made hundreds of religious figures and other items that she would give to loved ones and friends as Christmas gifts, or on other special occasions. She enjoyed cooking and baking, and held several blue ribbons from the Great Frederick Fair for her famous sugar cookie entries. She was an avid gardener, and took great pride in her many gardens, especially her flowers. She enjoyed oyster dinners at New Midway Fire Dept., Rocky Hill Church festivals, and attending her Grandson's baseball games at National Little League, MARVA Babe Ruth League, Thomas Johnson High School, Frederick American Legion and Mid Maryland Select Travel League. She also enjoyed watching her Granddaughter play basketball, and bowl duckpins, as well as, her son bowl duckpins and play drums in several bands over the years.
Charlotte was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church where she faithfully attended for many years.
Charlotte 's greatest qualities were her honesty, her love for her grandchildren and family, her great granddaughter, Naomi, her love for her Lord Jesus Christ, and her kind and giving heart. She always thought of others before herself. Special friends, Danny Miller, Glen Ness and Bob Thompson, as well as nieces, Kim Jenkins and Cheryl Paugh will dearly miss Charlotte.
Honorary Pallbearers are Grandson, Bradley Crum, Nephews, Gary Crum, Donald Crum, Craig Austin, Nevin Topper, Kevin Topper, Donnie Paugh, Gordon Jenkins and Dennis Ohler. Friends, Danny Miller, Quin Hartman, Bob Thompson, Gary Specht and Kevin Brennan.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9pm, on Monday, June 12, 2017, at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E, Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701. A memorial service will be held at 11:00AM, on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1415 West Seventh Street, Frederick, MD 21702. Rev. Ronald Reaves will officiate. Inurnment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at the above address. Online condolences may be shared at www.keeneybasford.com.
