Dean Ettl

September 28, 1926 — October 22, 2016

Mr. Dean Harrison Ettl, a long-time resident of Urbana, died at his home on Saturday, October 22, 2016.

Born in Englewood, New Jersey on September 28, 1926, he was the son of the late Charles Ettl and Margreta Gandy Ettl. He had just celebrated his 90 th birthday with his family.

Mr. Ettl grew up in Long Island, New York and Charlottesville, Virginia. He was a graduate of Lane High School in Charlottesville. In his later years, he enjoyed attending his high school reunions and reconnecting with several old friends.

He went into the US Army, serving in the Pacific, during World War II. He was very supportive of the VFW and the American Legion.

After his discharge, he studied art at Temple University in Philadelphia. For several years, he worked in the family business, Ettl Art Center, in Connecticut, a manufacturer and distributor of DaVinci clay and sculpting tools and equipment. They also offered art classes. Mr. Ettl’s family had owned and operated Ettl Studios in New York City, a monument casting company. In the early 1900’s, the only way to get sculpture cast into monuments was to send it back to Europe. Mr. Ettl’s grandfather built a monument foundry in the heart of New York City and developed a more accurate method for enlarging statues into monuments. Their work can be found all around the United States and including several prominent monuments in New York City and Washington, DC.

For most of his life, Mr. Ettl worked in the construction industry as a surveyor. He worked on many buildings in the Washington metropolitan area, including Dulles Airport.

Mr. Ettl was an avid sportsman who ran track and field in high school. As a young man, he loved skiing, ice skating, swimming, and boating on Long Island Sound. As he grew older, he took up jogging and then walking on a daily basis. He gardened for many years and loved to share his produce with family and friends. Mr. Ettl enjoyed studying art and history and was a music lover (classical, opera, and big band) with an extensive record collection. He was also a lover of antiques and frequented the Frederick auctions, particularly at the Frederick Fairgrounds, up until his death.

He is predeceased by his wife of 33 years, Patricia Rosencrantz Ettl and his step-mother, Catherine Hunt Ettl. He is survived by his three daughters, Johanna Springston (Mark) of Frederick, Pandora Gunsallus (James) of Pittsburgh, and Mary-Dulany James (Brian) of Havre de Grace, MD. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Evelyn Feeney, Grant Feeney, Jarrett James, and Patricia Springston. He is survived by his sister Diane Budd. He is also survived by his wife’s large family, including many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1-2pm on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. A memorial service will begin at 2pm. Online condolences may be shared at www.keeneybasford.com
