Ruth Evelyn Roney

Ruth Evelyn Roney, of 5957 Quinn Orchard Road, Apt 102, Frederick, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2016 surrounded by loving family and her devoted caregivers. She was born on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1929 and was the youngest daughter of Clyde and Olga Roney who preceded her in death. Ruth was the beloved sister of Alma Roney Whitehouse, now deceased, Walter L. Roney of Woodsboro, Clyde M. Roney of Williamsport and Jeanne Roney Lee of Bluffton, South Carolina. She was a loving sister in law to John F. "Jack" Whitehouse, Naomi Albaugh Roney, Wynne Roney and Dr. J. Moultrie Lee and a loving Aunt to Mary Ann Roney who also preceded her. She is survived by 9 nieces and nephews and their families.

In her later years, as her Alzheimer’s disease progressed, she and her sister Alma were wonderfully cared for at their home in Crestwood Village and then, after Alma’s passing, at Country Meadows by her companions and care givers who dearly loved her, Charlene Clark, Marie Cirella, Jane Gates and Sherry Frost. In the past 2 months, Carroll County Hospice helped to make her passing as gentle as it was.

She started her career in nursing by attending Church Home & Hospital School of Nursing in Baltimore, then University of Wisconsin for her BSN, and received her MSN from Boston University in 1965. She was employed by Massachusetts General Hospital and returned to Maryland in 1970 to become became assistant Director of Nursing at Maryland General Hospital, then Director of Nursing at GBMC and in 1981 she assumed her dream job as Vice President for Nursing at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She retired in 1990 and quickly became a professional volunteer. She was the first Chairman of the Board at Buckingham’s Choice, was on the Board of Trustees at Episcopal Ministries for The Aging, and was active on the Board at Advocates For Homeless Families. She delivered Meals on Wheels, volunteered at FMH and in the office at All Saint’s Episcopal Church.

Ruth was a lifelong, dedicated member of All Saint’s Episcopal Church where she was active in the St. Mary’s Chapter. She traveled extensively, enjoyed skiing, needlework, dining out, good wine, seafood and vanilla ice cream. She was a happy member of a group of friends titled "The Great Bailey’s Irish Cream Debating Society".

The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at 10 am at her beloved All Saint’s Episcopal Church, 106 W. Church Street, Frederick, Maryland 21701. Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery and there will be a reception following at All Saint’s hosted by the St. Mary’s Chapter.
