Herbert Jeo

July 12, 1931 — January 28, 2016

Herbert Jeo, age 84, died peacefully at his home in Walkersville Maryland after a short illness. Mr. Jeo is survived by his wife of 57 years, Donna Esterly Jeo, three children: Michael Jeo, David Jeo, Leanna Jeo Meadows and her husband David. He leaves behind two beloved grandchildren, Bryce Meadows and Corryn Meadows. He also leaves three living brothers and sisters: Leona Hasegawa, Lucy Kano and Franklin Jeo, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is survived by his sister in law Brenda Esterly. He was preceded in death by his parents Tome and Yoshiko (Baba) Jeo as well as by his siblings, Junior Jeo, Thomas Jeo, Idaho Jeo, Calvin Jeo, Jack Jeo and Eleanor Nishimoto.

Herbert was born in Rexburg Idaho on July 12th 1931. In his youth he went to school and did farm work in Dayton Idaho. He put himself through college and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Science in 1953 from the University of Idaho where he was a member of the schools boxing team and the ROTC detachment. After graduation he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. He served as an officer for 28 years in Korea, Germany, the United States, and he completed a combat tour of Vietnam with the Army’s First Infantry Division. While serving in Vietnam he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Legion of Merit, the Air Medal (11th award), and the Bronze Star medal on three separate occasions (Bronze star, first oak leaf cluster with V device, and second oak leaf cluster). During his time in the service he was also awarded the Meritorious Service medal, the National Defense medal, and the Korean Service medal. Herbert retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1980.

After retiring from the army Herbert earned a master’s degree in business administration and went on to have a second career at Homecall as an administrative officer. He retired from Homecall after 12 years of service.

In retirement Herbert traveled extensively with his wife, brothers and sisters and especially enjoyed traveling with his nephew and niece, William and Susan Hasegawa. He was an avid reader, and enjoyed doing yard work. He always seemed happiest when he was surrounded by his family. He was a wonderful grandfather and a kind, humble and generous man who will be greatly missed.

The funeral service will be held at Keeney & Basford Funeral Home on 106 East Church Street on Friday February 5, at 10:00 AM. Associate Pastor Kim Kesecker will officiate.  Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
