Mr. Raymond Lee Thomas, 92, of Frederick, died on Thursday, January 21, 2016, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Betty Renn Thomas. They were married in 1950. Born in Adamstown on December 30, 1923, he was a son of the late Lee C. and Kate C. Thomas.
He attended Adamstown Elementary, was a graduate of Frederick High School and attended Western Maryland College. He served his country during WW II in the United States Army. He participated in the battle of the Ardennes, Rhineland, Central and European Theaters.
He spent his entire life in the hardware industry at Frederick Trading Company, with his family, until 1995 and served as the CEO for the last 10 years. He had served as the treasurer of Liberty Distributors in La Plains, Ill., a buying group for hardware wholesalers. He had served on the board of directors at Fredericktowne Bank.
He was a member of the Adamstown Community Church and at one time Grace United Church of Christ, Frederick. He was also a member of the Frederick Rotary Club. He was an avid gardener and especially known for his beautiful vegetable garden. He was an avid sports fan, especially football.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his children, Joan Thomas Layton and husband Jim, of Henrico, NC, Lee Thomas, of Frederick, and Barbara J. Draper and husband Bob, of Frederick, two sisters, Myrtle Painter, of Frederick and Lucille Hall and husband Emory, of Virginia Beach, VA, seven grandchildren, Warren, John, Laura, Linda, Katy, Leah and Amy, eight great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and sister-in-law, Doris Renn, Adamstown. He was preceded in death by a brother, C. Archie Thomas.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., on Sunday, January 31, 2016, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., on Monday, February 1, 2016, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. Rev. Suzanne S. Morris, chaplain of Homewood, will officiate. Interment will be in the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
