Katherine Stott Curtis (aka Kathie, DD) died peacefully on October 11, 2015 in Frederick, Maryland at the age of 85. Katherine was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1930. The daughter of Naval Captain George W. Stott, and Helen Katherine Stott, she spent her childhood in Hawaii, the Philippines, and China. In the US she lived in California, Philadelphia and Washington, DC. As a Hood College graduate, she was the student director of art in her senior year. She had many interests including archery and piano. While attending Hood, she met her future husband, John (Gus) Curtis, a recent graduate of Mount Saint Mary's University. Kathie and Gus loved to travel; visiting England, Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Greece, Germany, Switzerland, and Russia. They were active members of the "Saturday Night Club", a social group of friends in the Frederick area, and were frequent hosts of dinner and cocktail parties. She held part time jobs as an accountant with Elkins Jewelry Store, Longmeadow Optical, John Williams Architecture, and a local theater company, THEAtricks. Kathie was a gifted artist; she created paintings, etchings, sculptures, ceramics, quilting, and stained glass pieces. Her home was filled with her artwork including a wall mural of Paris, many paintings, drawings, and needlework. She was a gifted seamstress and made much of her own clothing, as well as her children's. She was a lover of classical music, dance, and theater. At Christmas she would spend days decorating her Christmas tree with blue lights, cotton, tinsel, and a snowbird; when it was finished, it looked just like a moonlit tree with freshly fallen snow. Her Christmas cookies were so beautifully decorated you didn't want to eat them! She was a wonderful cook; her spaghetti and meatballs were legendary, as was her homemade bread. She was a tremendous lover of nature, plants, and animals. Kathie is pre-deceased by her husband, Gus Curtis; and is survived by her children, her grandchildren, and her brother George Stott. She will be dearly missed by everyone who knew her, but particularly by her children and their families: Dianne & Bill, Billy, Jack, Joe, & Andy; Karen, Erik, & Kelsey; Bill & Corinne, Madeline, & Danielle; Dave & Kathy; and Kayte & Joe. Nothing was as important to Kathie as her family. Services have been postponed to a later date. A private interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Frederick County, PO Box 1799, Frederick, Maryland 21702.
