Barbara Jean Smith Shugars, "G-Ma", 70 of Frederick, died on December 11, 2013 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late John Shugars and the late Walt Smelser. Born on October 31, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Raymond Grable and Ruth Smith. Jean worked for many years in the restaurant industry in and around Frederick. She enjoyed bowling and watching NASCAR as a Dale Earnhardt, Jr. fan. Ms. Shugars was devoted to her family and she took pleasure in cooking for them. She is survived by her daughter/sister Gale Smith, her son/brother William Smith and his wife Lori, children John Shugars, Jr. and his wife Terri and Troy Shugars; grandchildren Brandon, Johnny, Virginia, Kimberly, Allison and Kayla as well as 5 great-grandchildren. Additionally, she is survived by her sisters Linda Matthews and her husband Jesse and Glada Wetzel and her husband Keith. In addition to her 2 husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, Gerry Lee Shugars and siblings Frederick Thomas Smith, Margaret Naomi Griffith and Glenda Mae Paxton. The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 15 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 16 at 11:00 AM in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the Funeral Home, Pastor Jerry Price officiating. Interment will be in Utica Cemetery, Thurmont.
