Mrs. Verna Elizabeth Burrier Heffner, 86, of Frederick, who recently was a resident of Homewood at Crumland Farms, and had lived for several years with her daughter in Mt, Airy, passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2013, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the loving wife of the late Paul Luther Heffner, who died on April 25, 2007. They were married on November 5, 1949. Born in Lewistown on July 25, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Murray J. and Lerah Stull Burrier. Mrs. Heffner retired in 1992 after 30 years as an Insurance Agent with Frederick Underwriters. She was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, and she was a former member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church Utica, where she served as the treasurer of the Women s League for 26 years, sang with the choir, taught Sunday School and was the director of the Junior choir. Surviving are her children, Paul Richard Heffner and wife Carol, of Yellow Springs and Joann Heffner Harshman and husband Charles, of Mt. Airy, four grandchildren; Todd Richard Heffner and wife Larissa, Amy Jo Harshman Poffenberger and husband Michael, Ryan Scott Heffner and wife Lindsay and Gina Harshman Airing and husband Jason, siblings; John Burrier, of Middletown, Doris "Becky" Arbaugh, of Linwood, Kenneth "Joe" Burrier and wife Reba, of Union Bridge, Mary Ann Albaugh, of Westminster, Frank Burrier and wife Rosie, of Mt. Airy and Frederick Burrier, of Middletown, also many nieces and nephews. She will also be remembered by two aunts, Erma Stull Grove and Dorothy "Dot" Burrier Thomas, both of Frederick. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., on Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, October 16, 2013, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. Dr. Michael O'Donnell and Rev. Suzanne Morris, chaplain of Homewood of Crumland Farms, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick. Honorary pallbearers will be, Parker Free and Murray Burrier. Active pallbearers will be; Brian Free, David Burrier, Tim Burrier, Randy Burrier, Paul Albaugh and Steve Arbaugh. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Evangelical Lutheran Church, 35 East Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701.
