Sandra Summers

Sandra Kay Summers, 74, of Frederick, died peacefully following an extended illness on November 22, 2012 at the Golden Living Center Frederick. Known as Kay, she was born May 2, 1938 in Frederick and was the daughter of the late Victor M. and Mabel Keech Summers. The last of her immediate family, she is survived by paternal cousins, Mark Summers of Spicewood, TX, Fait Ann Foltz of Gettysburg, PA, Jeanne Myers of Columbia, MD and eleven maternal cousins including Ira Keech from York, PA. Kay was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frederick. She was a graduate of Frederick High School class of "1956" and enjoyed attending sporting events with classmates. She worked at the American Optical Company in Frederick from 1956 until its closing. She was employed by Frederick Memorial Hospital in the laundry department until retirement and illness. In her younger years, she enjoyed spending weekends with friends in Ocean City, MD and the shores of Chesapeake Bay. Kay loved and enjoyed Baker Park in Frederick, playing tennis in the summer and ice skating on Culler Lake in the winter. She enjoyed traveling and sight-seeing, especially in New York, PA and Washington D.C. and was avid photographer wherever she went. She was a member of the Venture Club, a volunteer service organization sponsored by Soroptimist International for young business women. She was a faithful member, serving as parade hostess and volunteered in many nursing homes spreading cheer to residents. She remained a remained a friend and caregiver to many elderly friends and their pets. She enjoyed cooking and entertaining friends, her home was always available for picnics and parties. Kay will be missed and remembered by her many friends especially her loving special care givers Marlene Reisinger and Sariah Glosenger, special friend Peggy Githerman and longtime friends Doris Smith and Effie Fulmer. Friends will be received from 10-11 am on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St, Frederick, Maryland. Funeral services will begin at 11 am at the funeral home. The Rev. Dr. Robert Driver-Bishop will officiate. Interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Kay's memory to the Evangelical Lutheran Church, 35 East Church Street, Frederick, Maryland 21701 or to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. 1799, Frederick, Maryland 21702.
