William A. Kennedy, Sr.

Mr. William A. "Bill" Kennedy, Sr., 89, of Frederick, died on Sunday, February 12, 2012 at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the devoted husband of Carrie L. Graser Kennedy, for over 64 years. Born July 11, 1922, in Frederick, he was a son of the late Frank Edward and Anna Poole Kennedy. Bill was a veteran of World War II and had enlisted in the Army in 1943 and served until his discharge in 1946. His service included two years in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations. Following his discharge, he worked for the Department of the Army for over 30 years and then retired with a total of 37 years of federal service at Fort Detrick in 1980. He was a life long member of Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Frederick. He was a life member and past commander of the Francis Scott Key Post 11, American Legion; a life member of the FSK Post 11 Past Commanders Club; a life member of the Amvets, Post 2, Frederick and the VFW Post 6658, Emmitsburg. Bill was also a member of the Voiture Locale 155, 40/8, Frederick and was also one of the last remaining members of the Last Men's Club, of the FSK Post 11, which was formed with 41 members in 1955. He was a former active and current life member of both the Independent Hose Company, No 1, and the Citizens Truck Company, No 4, both of Frederick. Mr. Kennedy was also a life member of the BPO Elks, 684; Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 1967 and in late years enjoyed his friends at the McDonald's Coffee Club. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, William A. Kennedy, Jr and wife Helen, of North Myrtle Beach, SC, Terre L. Kennedy and wife Jennifer, of Boonsboro; one sister, Kathryn Best, Hagerstown; Sister-in-law, Alice Kennedy, five grandchildren, Stacie Ridgely, Nicole Kennedy, Jason Kennedy, Frank Kennedy and Richard Rineholt; several great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also remembered by devoted friends, Diana Long and Rosalie Long. Mr. Kennedy was preceded in death by a son, Joseph E .Kennedy; a grandson, Timothy Hannah, three brothers, Robert E. Kennedy, Joseph S. Kennedy and John F. Kennedy. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Wednesday, February 15, 2012, from Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 118 East Second Street, Frederick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Msgr. Richard Murphy. Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.
