Dorothy Belle Volz Umbenhower, 85 of Frederick, died Wednesday, August 18, 2010 of unexpected complications at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Lewis Umbenhower, who died on May 31, 1975.
Born August 3, 1925 in Gahanna, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late George Raymond and Mary Ruth Volz.
Dorothy was retired from a long career with the Federal Government. Her interests included reading, crossword puzzles, sewing and enjoying her family and friends.
Dorothy is survived by her four children Lewis Umbenhower Jr of Waxhaw, NC, George Umbenhower of Raleigh, NC, Ramona Bautista of Waldorf, and Regina Creedon of Leonardtown; grandchildren. Amber Stillrich and her husband, John of Hagerstown; Michael Sprague of Waldorf, David Creedon and Meghan Creedon, both of Damascus; Heather Umbenhower of Bronx, NY, and Lewis Umbenhower, III. of Boston, MA; great-grandchildren, Taylor and Mackenzie Stillrich of Hagerstown, and Keevan Howard of Damascus; and several nieces and their families.
She will also be remembered by her pets, Chloe the cat and Pixie the Chihuahua.
In addition to her husband and parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her brother, Raymond Volz, and her sister, Margaret Houston.
The family will receive friends on Monday August 23, 2010 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick, MD 21701. Dorothy's Life Celebration will begin at 6:00 p.m. Monday from the funeral home chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Katrina L. Holland.
Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
