Mrs. Helen L. (Shipley) Garber, 94, died on December 24, 2011 at her home in North Olmsted, Ohio. Born in Frederick on August 2, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Emory B. and Helen L. (Mullican) Shipley, and the wife of the late George David "Jim" Garber, who she married on February 24, 1940.
Mrs. Garber was educated in Frederick schools and graduated in 1934. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Hood College in 1938. After graduation, she worked as a social worker with the Baltimore City Welfare Department, and then with Cuyahoga County Social Services until she retired in 1981. Mrs. Garber was a member of the Westlake United Methodist Church, Chapter 79 Order of Eastern Star and Baycrafters.
She was preceded in death by brothers Emory B., Donald R., Ralph B. and Richard L. Shipley; sisters Virginia B. Dyson and Doris J. Insley; brother-in-law Marion C. Insley; and sister-in-law Elizabeth J. (Etchison) Shipley. She is survived by sisters-in-law Margaret J. (Arris) and Eleanor (Heston) Shipley, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews. She frequently returned to Frederick over the years to visit with family and attend high school and college reunions.
Mrs. Garber's funeral is scheduled for Saturday, January 7 at 11:00 a.m. at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home on 106 E. Church St. in Frederick. Family will receive friends prior to the service starting at 10:00. Officiating will be Rev. Harry C. Cole of Calvary United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Frederick.
