Audrey Jean Hemp Stone, passes away on March 25, 2026.
Born on May 29, 1931 in Baltimore, Maryland, Audrey Jean Hemp Stone was the beloved daughter of Joseph C. Hemp and Cleo Edna Hemp. She spent her formative years in Walkersville, Maryland, graduating from high school in 1948.
Audrey went on to attend Greenbrier College, graduating in 1950. A vibrant and engaged student, she was crowned the 1950 Greenbrier Queen, served as President of the Art Club, and was active in both the Spanish Club and the Campus Players. She also served as treasurer of Sigma Iota Chi sorority. Audrey remained a devoted alumna throughout her life, frequently hosting Florida alumni luncheons and was honored with the prestigious Spirit of Greenbrier Award in 2020. One of her most meaningful contributions to her alma mater was a generous gift that funded signage for the Greenbrier College Memorial Grove—a campus beautification project dedicated in 2022. This serene space continues to be enjoyed by students, faculty, and visitors alike.
With a keen eye for beauty and a lifelong passion for fine furniture and home décor, Audrey pursued work in High Point, NC, an area known as the Furniture Capital of the World.
She married Charles L. Alcorn, and they had one daughter, Jeanne, who resides in Clearwater, Florida.
Audrey later married Clement A. Stone, Sr. VP with Merck Pharmaceutical, whose career was distinguished by patent awards for advances in the treatment of numerous medical conditions. Together they shared many adventures, including years living abroad in Japan. Audrey’s time there sparked a deep appreciation for Japanese artistry. Her home became a showcase of her travels, filled with elegant furniture and artwork that reflected her admiration for the culture and its refined aesthetics.
Audrey’s roots run deep at the family Walkersville homestead, Square Acres Farms, a cherished property featuring a graceful 220 year-old farmhouse, a carriage barn, and rolling acres of farmland. She often spoke fondly of her childhood memories there, especially her mother’s prized peacocks that proudly paraded across the grounds. A white ceramic planter, perched on the porch steps, was always brimming with brilliant red geraniums—her mother’s signature touch. Audrey lovingly carried on that tradition throughout her life, keeping the planter filled each year in a heartfelt tribute to her family and the home that shaped her.
Audrey’s final residence was a beautiful, light-filled apartment at Lake Seminole Square in Seminole, Florida. She cherished the tranquil view from her enclosed lakeside porch, finding daily joy in watching graceful birds and the occasional visiting alligator. During her time there, Audrey was surrounded by a devoted team of caregivers and professionals whose compassion and attentiveness ensured her comfort and well-being. Their kindness was a great gift in her final years.
Audrey is also fondly remembered for her loyal companion, Teddy—a spirited five-pound white Maltese whose charm made him a favorite among neighbors and friends alike. A visitation at Brett Funeral Home is being held on Tuesday, March 31st from 1 to 3 PM, 4810 Central Avenue, St. Petersburg FL. Interment will be at 11AM, on Thursday, April 9, 2026 at the Hemp Stone burial plot in historic Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick, Maryland.
