It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Carl VanBibber on March 22, 2026. Born on August 22, 1935 in Kokomo, Indiana, Carl was the son of Charles and Armina VanBibber. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Barbara VanBibber. When he was five, his family moved to Florence, Alabama where he grew up.
Carl received his Bachelor's degree from Florence State College where he played in the marching band. At graduation, Carl received his commission as an officer in the U.S.Army. He went on to serve his country for 28 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. Carl served two tours in Vietnam and one in Korea. He received the Purple Heart for injury during the Tet Offensive and also the Silver Star. After military retirement, Carl worked for the Department of Defense at the 97th ARCOM at Ft. Meade.
Florence State is also where Carl met his loving wife, Peggy. Carl and Peggy loved to travel. During their 64 years of marriage, they enjoyed many wonderful trips. They had visited a number of countries outside of the USA and 49 of the 50 states, only missing Rhode Island.
Carl loved his Lord and his church. He was an active member of First Baptist Church, Frederick since 1972, where he served as a deacon and a teacher/director in the first and second grade Sunday school department for over 20 years.
Carl also served his community in many capacities. As a member of the Evening Sertoma Club, he served a term as president and loved being part of the team that put up the flags downtown on each government holiday.
Carl was also involved with several car clubs. Many trips were enjoyed with the Mid-Atlantic Plymouth Club in his '60 Valiant.
Besides his wife, Carl is survived by his children, Mike VanBibber (Laurie), Mark VanBibber (Nicole), and Karla Archer (Randy). He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at First Baptist Church, Frederick, MD at 11 AM on April 4 with visitation beginning at 10. Interment will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the First Baptist Church Frederick, MD or to perform an act of kindness in Carl's name.
