Chester Leon Redmond Jr.

Chester L. Redmond, Jr., 100, of Frederick, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at Kline Hospice House in Mt. Airy. He was the loving husband of Nellie Redmond for nearly 76 years. As a reflection of their love, devotion and strong faith, together they created a loving home where they raised four children, who still today remain close in both affection and proximity.

Born January 14, 1926, in Frederick, Md, Chester was the son of the late Chester Redmond, Sr., and Dorothy (Crummitt) Redmond.

Chester attended school in Frederick through the 8th grade, at which time he announced that he was finished with school. In response, his mother told him to find a job, and that he did! Throughout his life, he believed in working hard. Early on he found jobs as a janitor, dish washer, stock boy and then brush maker at the original Ox Fibre Brush Company in Frederick. Truly a member of the “Greatest Generation,” he left the brush company in 1944 to serve his nation in the U.S. Navy at Naval Station Pearl Harbor.

Following his honorable discharge from military service, Chester returned to Frederick and began a rewarding career at Fort Detrick as a police officer and security guard, animal caretaker, and lab technician at USAMRIID where he was acknowledged for his work in research papers authored by lead scientists. He retired with full service from the Federal Government. Never one to be idle, Chester found a rewarding second (third?) career at Harlan Sprague Dawley Services in Frederick, MD where he quickly became an integral member of their team. Not bad for an 8th grade education!

Throughout his life, Chester was an avid fisherman, hunter, and gardener. He and Nellie enjoyed the beautiful views from their porch which they called their “little slice of paradise.” They would wave as neighbors passed by and welcomed many of them to their porch for a visit. Chester’s pride in his home could be clearly seen in his immaculate landscaping and beautiful flower gardens. He was a faithful member of Mount Carmel UMC and a dedicated member of the AMVETS Post 2 as well as a lifetime member of the American Legion.

Above all else, Chester was the most loving husband, father, and grandfather. We will forever cherish the memories made as we regularly gathered at home for family celebrations, holidays and delicious Sunday meals.

Surviving are his children, Linda Jenkins of Jefferson, Mark Redmond and wife, Debbie, of Frederick, Trudy Roelke and husband, Bob, of Frederick, Lori Cage and husband, Pete, of Damascus. Chester was blessed with the following grandchildren: Ryan Jenkins, Marcie (Jenkins) Kozlencer, Kristi Redmond, Andy Redmond, Wesley Redmond, Cliff Redmond, Rob Roelke and Erin Roelke, as well as 14 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Nellie, sister Mary Stup, brother Russell Redmond and son-in-law Dennis Jenkins.

The family will receive friends on Friday, August 14, 2026, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick, from 12:00 to 1:00 PM, with the funeral service immediately following. Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Chester wanted everyone attending his services to be comfortable. He specifically requested that no one wear a tie!
