David “John” Carroll Hoffman, affectionately known as “Pap”, 84, of Frederick, MD, passed on Saturday August 15, 2026. Born in Frederick on March 6, 1942 to the late Walter Grayson and Ella Beatrice (Cook) Hoffman. He was the beloved husband of over 60 years to Laverna (Martin) Hoffman.

John was born, raised, and spent most of his life in Frederick. He graduated from Frederick High School in 1961. He would spend most of his working career as an animal caregiver and handler for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). A career he shared with his brothers. Often carpooling together. After his retirement from NIH, John became a delivery driver for Wickes Lumber which he loved doing. John proudly served in the United States Army for 2 years.

John will be remembered as a kind, generous, and very funny man. He made many family and friends laugh. John also enjoyed spending time with his family. Often telling tall tales and convincing people they were true events.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by; his daughters, Kimberly Hansberger (Mike), Lori Frocke (Gene), and Johnna Matson (J.B.), his siblings, Irene Forest and Ronald Hoffman, grandchildren, Jeremy Frocke, Jenna Matson (Kolby), Jake Young (Jess), Cole Young (Maggie), Kaitlyn Matson (Devin), Kaylee Frocke and Brandon Matson, his special friend and neighbor Larry Herald,, 6 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, John is predeceased by his cherished aunt and uncle, Ethel and Hubert Hoffman, who helped raise him, his brothers Mark Hoffman and Bill Hoffman, and his beloved pets Lady and Jackson.

Family and friends can gather at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701, on Wednesday August 19, 2026 from 4pm to 7pm. A second visitation will take place on Thursday August 20, 2026, from 11am until the start of the funeral service at 12pm. Interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.

Memorial donations may be made in John’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675.
