Derek Robert Van Buren, beloved son, a proud veteran, and a loving husband passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 16, 2026, in Frederick, MD, at the age of 49. Born on December 17, 1976, in Sacramento, California, he was the son of the late Robert Van Buren and Elizabeth Van Buren.
After graduating from high school, Derek answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force from 2000-2004. His military service imbued him with a sense of discipline and camaraderie that would leave a lasting impact on his life.
Upon completing his military service, Derek attended Towson University where he earned his Bachelor's of Science in Geography. He then began his career as a project specialist for the FDA. Derek's colleagues and clients will remember him not only for his expertise but also for his unwavering dedication and kindness.
On April 21, 2017, Derek married Amber Camella Presti in Ellicott City, MD. It was here where together they began a new chapter as husband and wife. Together they enjoyed music, concerts, road trips and their pet cat Parker, named after Charlie Parker, one of their favorite jazz musicians.
Derek leaves behind a legacy of service, kindness, and love. He will be deeply missed by family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him, especially the wonderful caretakers at Somerford House in Frederick, MD.
Derek is survived by his only brother, Brian Van Buren, his nephew Bailey Van Buren and niece Madison Van Buren.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Keeney and Basford Funeral Homes, P.A., in Frederick MD. A military service will be held for Derek at the Veterans Cemetery in Hurlock, MD, date to be determined. In addition, Derek’s life will be forever cherished and a celebration of life will be planned at a later date.
