Douglas J. Francis

Douglas J. Francis, aged 74, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2026, in Frederick, Maryland.
Born in Newburgh, New York, Doug grew up in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Bishop Hannan High School in 1970. A lifelong learner with a passion for education, he earned his undergraduate degree from Mansfield State College (now Commonwealth University-Mansfield), then completed several master’s degrees at Shippensburg State College (now Shippensburg University).

Doug dedicated his professional life to fostering a love of learning and literacy, teaching Library Science in the Littlestown Area School District in Pennsylvania for 40 years. He was a long-time resident of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where he lived for 45 years. He spent his last seven years being lovingly cared for at Sunrise Senior Living in Frederick, Maryland.

An adventurous traveler, Doug explored the world with trips to Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, China, and Russia. At home, he was a man of varied passions: an avid concertgoer, music lover, voracious reader, and film enthusiast. He enjoyed British television, needlepoint, keeping aquariums, and sharing his life with beloved pet cats. Gifted with a keen intellect and a gentle heart, Doug was a wonderful listener and was sought out by many for his wisdom and advice.

Doug was a beloved member of the extended family. He truly enjoyed playing games with both children and adults, especially at holiday gatherings and beach vacations. He was famous in the family for his jigsaw puzzle skills, as well as his mastery of Jeopardy and Trivial Pursuit contests. He was also renowned for his cookie baking skills and his Jello shooters.
Doug was a cherished son, brother, and uncle. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie C. and Elizabeth P. Francis. He is survived by his brother, Corbett C. Francis and his wife, Beverly; his brother, Paul L. Francis and his wife, Victoria; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, a grand niece, and grand nephews, who will miss his intellect, curiosity, and presence.
