Edward Leroy Despeaux

Edward Leroy Despeaux, 90, of Thurmont, Maryland, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2026.

Born on September 24, 1935, Edward lived a life defined by hard work, humility, and unwavering devotion to his family. He shared 71 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Joan. Even after more than seven decades together, their love for one another remained as strong as ever and served as an inspiration to everyone who knew them.

Edward was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, JoAnn Grooms; his son-in-law, Robert Mathews; his parents, Virginia and John Howard Leroy Despeaux; and his sister, Jeanne Breeden.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joan; his children, Cyreasa Sprankle (Danny), Craig Despeaux (Nancy), Anne Reaver (Matt), Bryant Despeaux (Marjie), and Renee Mathews; his son-in-law, Bill Grooms; his sister, Christina Hurley; ten cherished grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren, all of whom were the pride and joy of his life.

A 1953 graduate of Frederick High School, Edward married Joan on January 1, 1955, beginning a remarkable partnership that would last a lifetime. In 1954, he joined the Maryland Army National Guard, where he served on the Governor's Pistol Team as a marksman. He served full-time in the Guard and continued serving part-time for a total of 13 years, demonstrating his commitment to his country.

Edward began his career as a draftsman at Fort Detrick and later worked for Brosious Homes. In 1964, he became a Washington Post newspaper distributor, a role he faithfully carried out while also serving as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service. For 35 years, he spent his days delivering mail throughout the Frederick area and his nights delivering newspapers, working tirelessly to provide for his family and create opportunities for his children. Edward's strength and determination were evident throughout his life. He was a survivor, courageously overcoming both colon and bladder cancers.

Always eager to learn and experience new things, Edward took flying lessons and proudly completed his first solo flight in October 1971. He enjoyed watching historical war movies, was an avid reader with a lifelong passion for history, especially the Civil War, and rarely missed reading several newspapers each day to stay informed about current events.

Edward was a devoted fan of the New York Yankees and the Washington Commanders and enjoyed watching professional tennis. In retirement, he looked forward to golfing and sharing lunch with friends. A longtime member of the Frederick Church of the Brethren, he lived his faith through quiet acts of kindness, and service rather than seeking recognition.

More than anything else, Edward loved his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. His selfless nature, gentle spirit, strong work ethic, and unconditional love touched the lives of everyone who knew him. His legacy will live on through the values he instilled in his family and the countless memories they will treasure forever.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Edward's life at Frederick Church of the Brethren, 201 Fairview Avenue, Frederick, MD 21701, on Friday, August 7, 2026. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Interment will immediately follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Frederick. Family and friends are then invited to return to the Frederick Church of the Brethren for a reception and time of fellowship.
