Frank Stephen Wal, 97, of 6601 English Muffin Way died peacefully in his sleep Sunday evening, June 29, 2025 in his apartment with his wife, Audrey, nearby.
Born in Rome, New York, he was the son of the late Frank and Anna Yaworski Wal. He was an elementary principal and retired from Montgomery County Public Schools, MD in 1989. A few years later Frank and Audrey moved to The Albemarle Plantation in Hertford, NC with a wonderful view of the Albemarle Sound. After 30 years there, they returned to MD to be closer to family. Mr. Wal was a member of the Montgomery Central Lions Club, MD (1973-1994), a Docent for the Newbold-White House in Herford, NC (1996-2001), a founding member of the Board of Directors for the Perquimans County Schools Foundation, Inc., NC and a proud member of the American Legion Post #40, Edenton, NC, current member of American Legion Post #96 in Brunswick, MD, and Perquimans County Republican Committee. Frank was also very proud to have served his country in WWII. He held the rank of Radarman 3rd class and was assigned to the U.S.S. San Marcos (LSD-25) which was part of the Pacific Theater.
Survivors include his wife of almost 70 years - August 20, 2025 would have made 70; two daughters, Lynne Severn of Urbana, MD and Susan Peck and husband Greg of Hagerstown, MD; two sons, Mark Wal and wife Kathleen of Frederick, MD and Thomas Wal and wife Melissa of Adamstown, MD; his youngest sister, Stephanie Wal of Rochester, NY; 6 Grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2025, place and time to be determined. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (https://www.stjude.org/donate/donate-to-st-jude.html?sc_icid=header-btn-donate-now).
Found in an old wallet of Frank’s was the following:
Don’t Quit (author unknown)
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will.
When the road you’re trudging seems all up hill.
When funds are low and the debts are high,
and you want to smile, but you have to sigh.
When care is pressing you down a bit, rest if you must,
But Don’t You Quit!
