George M. Mertz

October 6, 1943 — January 6, 2023

George Michael Mertz, 79, of Frederick Md. passed away on Friday, January 6, 2023. Born on October 6, 1943 he was the son of the late Francis Leo and Lucille Gertrude (Green) Mertz. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Mary Elsen and two brothers Tom and John Mertz. George is survived by his brother, Jim, sister-in-law, Mary Anne and many loving nieces and nephews.

George lived in Frederick with his friends and housemates, Jeffrey Niles and David Runkles. George was lovingly cared for by his friends/caregivers Pam Raley and Ann Simmons. Much love and thanks go out to his friend, Vonnie Niles with whom he shared countless outings and visits.

George had a network of friends at Medsource Community Services who worked every day to make sure that he was living his best life and who helped him reach every goal. Every team member touched his life in a special way and helped create a happy and fun atmosphere.

George attended the Human Development Council in Frederick until his retirement in 2022 where he had many friends. Among those is Diana Long who spent many years with him at HDC.

George enjoyed gardening, doing crafts, special outings with his housemates and just relaxing at home tearing his paper. George had many friends in the close community where he lived.

Friends will be received on Wednesday, January 18th at 10am for a memorial service at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home.
