Janice Irene Lewis Harshman of Frederick, Maryland passed away at her son’s home on Sunday, December 31, 2023. Janice was born on June 12, 1932, on Highland School Road, Myersville, Maryland to the late Roger W. Lewis and Hilda Mae Lewis. She was baptized at age eleven in the cold waters of Middle Creek at Grossnickle Church of the Brethren. She lived the rest of her life fully devoted to Jesus. She was a graduate of Middletown High School class of 1950, the first class to have twelve full years. Janice graduated as a registered nurse from Church Home & Hospital of Nursing (now known as Johns Hopkins School of Nursing) Baltimore, Maryland in 1953. She worked at Church Home & Hospital for one year before returning to Frederick to begin working at Frederick Memorial Hospital for the next three years. On April 17, 1955, she married Maynard William Harshman, and they enjoyed forty-three happy years together before his passing in February 1998. After their marriage she moved to the family farm on Elmer Derr Road where she became an unofficial vet, errand-runner, gardener, and canner. When her youngest daughter started school, she returned to private duty nursing. After retiring from nursing, she was a hospice volunteer. A member and deacon of Frederick Church of the Brethren for more than sixty years, she enjoyed serving in many capacities including teaching a young adult class with her husband. She also was a delegate for Church of the Brethren Annual Conference and committee chairperson for the Mid-Atlantic Disaster Auction for many years. In retirement, she and Maynard travelled extensively visiting forty-eight states, Puerto Rico, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, and Austria. After Maynard’s death she continued to travel to Hawaii, Alaska, England, Ireland, and Scotland. She also cruised to Bermuda, Jamaica, Cozumel, and the Grand Caymans with her children and grandchildren. She is predeceased by her parents, husband, and her sister Doris Cline. She is survived by her son Vaughn Harshman (Diane) and daughters Dana James and Christy Beth Brandenburg (Stephen). Additionally, she is survived by her dearly loved grandchildren, Nathan Harshman, Ellen Brandenburg, Grant Brandenburg, Elaine Brandenburg, and Bryce James. The family will receive friends from 4pm to 7pm, on Friday, January 5, 2024 at the Frederick Church of the Brethren,201 Fairview Avenue, Frederick, MD 21701. The funeral service will be held at 10:00AM, on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at the church. The burial will be held after the service at 1:30PM, at the Grossnickle Church of the Brethren Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Deacon's Fund at the church at the above address.
