On Monday, October 17, 2022, Joy Denise Comer, loving mother of two children and grandma “Bunny” to two grandchildren, passed away at the age of sixty-one. A lifelong resident, she was born in Frederick on September 16, 1961 to Roy Lee Comer and Joan Lee Comer.
Joy grew up an avid runner and overall athlete. She graduated from Thomas Johnson High School, where she held multiple track records. She went on to attend Salisbury University where she ran track and earned her Bachelor of Science in physical education. After college, Joy spent many years as a physical education teacher at Monocacy Middle School. During that time, she also returned to her high school alma mater as head coach of the women’s varsity basketball team for several years.
Joy was a deeply kind and empathetic person with a profound love for her pets. She was an avid reader and a major sports fan. Many of her days were spent viewing Orioles games, watching the Ravens play with her family, or keeping up to date on Duke University sports. She was a fan of music and especially enjoyed Fleetwood Mac and Bonnie Raitt. She had a love of fashion and sneakers, most notably in bright colors.
Joy was best known for her generous spirit, sarcastic and keen sense of humor, and love of spending time with family. She spent a lifetime of summers in Avon, NC with her parents and siblings, which later became a tradition she shared with her own children.
Joy was a fierce survivor of various health ailments throughout her life, including both pancreatic and breast cancer. She didn’t take time with family for granted and enjoyed doting on her grandchildren. She looked forward to family traditions such as celebrating the holidays and sharing countless meals at Mountain View Diner with the people she loved.
She is survived by her brother, Jeff Comer, twin sister, Jill Dahlgren, her two sons, Vince and Zachary Kennedy, her daughters-in-law, Julie Sapadith and Michelle Kennedy, and her two grandchildren, Kit and Aster Kennedy.
