Kathryn Josephine Mullican

December 29, 1935 — May 4, 2024

Kathryn J. Mullican passed surrounded by family on May 4, 2024, in Sykesville.  She was the loving wife of the late Albert S. Mullican Jr for 54 years and a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Surviving are her five children: Rebecca and husband Dick Crowell, Michelle and husband Gary McMillan, Karen and husband Brian Wynne, Mark and wife Mary Lynne Mullican and Clay and wife Kathy Mullican.  She adored her grandchildren (Alec Crowell and wife Liza, Lance Harrison and wife Abi, Chase Harrison, Stevie Harrison and husband Yosafe Wakwaya, Luke Harrison, Jessie Harrison, Mitchell Harrison, Josh Wynne and wife Elisabeth, the late Kelsey Wynne, Zach Wynne, Nick Wynne and wife Sara, Mikey Wynne and wife Rebecca, Kevin Wynne and wife Allie, Ryan Mullican, Claire Mullican, Sean Mullican and wife Allie, Jake Mullican, and Dylan Mullican) and delighted in her nine great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Mullican was born Dec. 29, 1935, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the daughter of the late Anne Santangelo and William Oden.

She was a graduate of Frederick High School and Hood College.  Mrs. Mullican devoted her professional life to teaching and advocating for children, finishing her career as Director of Frederick County Head Start.  Her work ethic led to completion of her college degree and rise from teacher’s aide to Director while working full-time and raising her family.  She also taught swimming and coached the Frederick YMCA Girls Swim Team.

Mrs. Mullican steadfastly supported the many educational and sports endeavors of her children and grandchildren, traveling to events and volunteering for their organizations – from 4-H to Scouts to teams.  Her hospitality was legendary as her home was always open and she generously cooked for family and friends and friends of friends.  She was unfailingly thoughtful, even offering support and encouragement to the medical teams caring for her in her final years.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 6 p.m., Friday, May 17 at Keeney & Basford Funeral Homes, P.A., 106 E. Church St, Frederick.  Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 18 at St. John the Evangelist Church, 118 E. 2nd Street, Frederick, followed by interment in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
