Mr. Larry Douglas Lathrop, 78, of Frederick passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2026. He was the husband of Nancy Lathrop for 56 years.

Born May 5, 1947 in Bath, NY, he was the son of the late LD Lathrop and Iva Drake.

Larry graduated from Canisteo High School in New York in 1966. He went on to attend Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, Maryland, where he met the love of his life, Nancy. They were married in 1969.

Larry proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1975.

He continued his education at Cornell University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Plant Pathology in 1976, followed by a Master’s degree from Penn State University in 1979.

After completing his studies, Larry worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. In 1986, he began a distinguished career with the United States Government as an Intelligence Analyst, retiring in 2002.

In retirement, Larry joyfully embraced his favorite role—being the number one babysitter to his beloved grandchildren, whom he adored. He was a private pilot and a ham radio operator. He also enjoyed researching family genealogy and preserving his family’s history, and was committed to animal rescue.

In addition to his wife, Larry is survived by his daughters; Jennifer Lathrop-Hill (Marvin) and Joanna Lathrop (Patrick Burkman), granddaughter; Kylea Hill, grandson; Ryan Hill, siblings; Norma Ronkette, Frank Lathrop, Allen Lathrop, George Lathrop, Wesley Lathrop, Louisa Smith and Mary Smith, numerous nieces and nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by siblings; Morse Lathrop and Thomas Lathrop.

In lieu of flowers the family would encourage donations to the Briggs Animal Adoption Center, 3731 Berryville Pike, Charles Town, WV 254114-4755.

The family will do a memorial gathering at a later date.
