OLIVER HALL BARTLETT, JR (SY)
(October 9, 1926 – July 22, 2026)
Oliver Hall Bartlett Jr, (Sy), 99, of Frederick, MD changed addresses to Heaven on July 22, 2026. Born in Atlanta, GA to Oliver Hall and Lenora Kathryn Bartlett on Oct. 9, 1926, he experienced a century of changes!
Growing up he worked at Child’s Pharmacy delivering packages/prescriptions on his bicycle for 3 cents a delivery, painted homes and unloaded trucks for the railroad. After his West Fulton HS graduation (1943), he entered the Army Air Corp (now Air Force) enabling him to later graduate from Georgia Tech (1949) & land a job at the Army Security Agency (now NSA) in Washington DC where he worked 36 yrs, culminating as Division Chief in both Engineering Research and Operation, & was also Chairman of IEEE.
In 1952, he married his beautiful wife of 63 years, Dorothy Mills, at First Baptist Church of Washington DC, where they attended over 50 years. Sy served as Deacon, Moderator, etc., until moving to South Columbia Baptist Church, closer to home.
As a young father, Sy co-founded the Atholton Swim Club and was co-founder & coach of the Atholton Youth Recreation Association. Throughout his life, he remained an avid gardener, wild turkey hunter, world traveler, 3 mi/day walker, poet to friends, master storyteller and by the campfire sang his original song “Camping Is So Much Fun…” with his original lyrics recapping the highlights of our day. He brought great fun to our lives.
Predeceased by his parents and sister, Martha Jenkins (husband Herb) of GA, he is survived by son Stephen E. Bartlett of Plum Branch, SC and daughter Deborah Bartlett Dilley (husband Richard deceased) and 3 beautiful granddaughters Melinda Eldin, Carolyn Reid and Janette Case (husband Marvin), all of Frederick, MD, plus a very special friend his last years, Ruth Rich.
Funeral services will be held at 1 pm on Monday, July 27, 2026 at Keeney & Basford Funeral Homes, P.A. 106 E. Church St. Frederick, MD. 21701. Friends and family are welcome to visit preceding the service from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm. Interment will be at Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Marriottsville, MD at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Frederick Health Hospice, Frederick, MD.
