Patrick Donald Mullen, age 72, passed away in Frederick, Maryland, on August 17, 2026.
Pat was born on Good Friday, April 16, 1954, in Dayton, Ohio, to Thomas and Marianne (Bauer) Mullen. He graduated from the University of Dayton in 1976 and began a long and rewarding career in civil engineering, which took him and his family from Ohio to Long Island and Westchester County, New York, and Frederick, Maryland.
In New York, Pat was involved in many career-defining projects, including the replacement of the World Trade Center subway station after 9/11, and the Tappan Zee bridge across the Hudson River in 2013. In 2005, he moved to Frederick, Maryland, and led the teams that built the Silver Line to Washington Dulles International Airport and the first phase of the Intercounty Connector, Maryland’s first all-electronic toll road.
Pat was a member of St. Ignatius of Loyola parish in Ijamsville and found meaning and friendship in being involved in the church’s weekly men’s groups. He was also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and The Moles, a professional civil engineering society in New York City.
As a lover of history and food, he enjoyed traveling with his camera in tow to Ireland, France, Italy, the UK and Iceland, and delighted in seeing the Panama Canal in 2021. He had a lifelong love of baseball and the Cincinnati Reds, and he reveled in attending major and minor league ball games wherever he lived. Pat was a wonderful husband, father, and friend to many. He will be dearly missed for his sense of humor, sharp intellect and great conversation.
Pat is lovingly survived by his wife of 49 years, Marla Mullen, and his children, Ryan Mullen (Lauren Woods) of Chicago, Illinois, and Katie Mullen (Hank Alme) of Baltimore, Maryland. He is also survived by his brothers, John Mullen (Lynne) of Gainesville, FL; and James Mullen (Kristen) of Stillwater, OK; and sisters, Susan Search (Chris) of Kettering, OH; Beverly Idzakovich (John) of Miamisburg, OH; and Jean Sexton (Flynn) of Kettering, OH. Pat was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Marianne Mullen.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11am, Monday, October 5, 2026, at St. Ignatius of Loyola Roman Catholic Church in Ijamsville, Maryland.
Memorial contributions may be made in honor of Pat to the American Diabetes Association and the American Society of Civil Engineers.
