Rose Marie Theresa DeMeo Whalen 86 passed away peacefully on August 12th, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on Mother’s Day May 12th. Rose Marie grew up in White Plains NY. In her early years she attended St. Johns Parochial School in Westchester NY. She graduated from White Plains High School in 1958 and married on August 4th of that summer.
Rose Marie was a member of Holy Name of Mary catholic church in Montrose PA. She found her greatest joy in time spent with family and friends. She enjoyed watching and helping her husband make furniture in their garage workshop. She loved her home, took immense pride in decorating it, and cherished evenings on the front porch watching birds and tending to her flowers. She loved to do needlepoint and crewel in her spare time, winning an award at the Harford Fair. A lifelong animal lover, Rose Marie, raised and rescued many Boston Terriers, and her compassion was evident in her efforts to find forever homes for Boston Terriers and other dogs in need. She was an avid football fan and loved rooting for her Nittany Lions, Eagles and Giants. In her later years, she loved watching TV westerns and her favorite movie series was “Love Comes Softly”.
Rose Marie was a member of the Better Business and Professional Women’s group before helping establish the Friendship Club with her dear friend, Margit Walters. She often expressed deep appreciation for Rita DeRiancho, a cherished friend who helped arrange for her to receive Holy Communion at home.
Following her lymphoma diagnosis in 2024, Rose Marie recovered with the exceptional care she received at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, including support from her oncology nurse, Amy Goodrich.
Rose Marie was preceded in death by her father, Raphael DeMeo; her mother, Rita (Bridgid) DeMeo; her father-in-law, Burton Earl Whalen; her mother-in-law, Helen Whalen; her brother-in-law Robert Whalen and sister-in-law Dorothy Whalen.
Rose Marie is survived by her husband, Burton Guy Whalen; her son, Bernard Whalen, and his wife, Yuxiang Whalen; her daughter, Patricia Whalen-Boone, and her husband, Joseph Boone Jr.; her grandchildren, Kelly Pickering, Lydia Whalen, Grant Myers, and Bridget Roberts and her husband, Jacob Roberts; her great-grandchildren, Weston and Spencer; her nephew, Thomas Whalen; and her nieces, Cindy Fisher and Cathy Tracy and her husband, Chris Tracy. She will also be dearly missed by her faithful companion, Daisy Mae IV.
A funeral Mass for Rose Marie will be celebrated on Monday, August 24, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Name of Mary Church, 278 South Main St., Montrose, PA 18801, followed by interment at Saint Lawrence Cemetery, 197 McHughs Hill Rd., Great Bend Township, PA 18821.

Rose Marie will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
