February 23, 1948 — November 7, 2025

Frederick

Susan Rebecca Hooper, 77, passed away peacefully at home on November 7, 2025, surrounded by family and friends after a prolonged illness.

Born February 23, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Helen Amelia Boyer Hooper and Marshall Hooper. She is survived by her sister, Sarah Hooper, and nieces and nephews Lauren Rebecca Thurber and husband Jordan; Luke Robert Hooper; Dr. Levi Timothy Hooper and fiancée Anna Eursiriwan; and great-nephew Jaxton Daniel Thurber and his soon-to-arrive little brother. She was one of twenty-five cousins in a family bound by shared history and affection.

Susan graduated from Frederick High School, earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Frostburg University, and her Master of Science in Education from McDaniel College. She devoted over 45 years to teaching at Westminster High School (WHS), where she also served as Department Chair.

A passionate coach of tennis and field hockey, she led her teams to multiple state championships over 26 years and cherished the relationships she built with her players, whom she considered family. In recognition of her achievements, she was inducted into the Carroll County Sports Hall of Fame in 2005 and she was one of the first women to have a athletic field named after her in Carroll County the "Hooper & Baker Field".

During her teaching career, Susan lived with Carolyn and the late Gordon Blount, who provided not only a house but a true home, filled with warmth, love, and friendship. They were a central part of her life, and she considered them family in every way.

She is also survived by Sandy Currence, a dear and steadfast friend whose support and companionship were integral to her many successes at WHS, and Brenda Baker, her longtime colleague and comrade. Special thanks are extended to Claude H. Droneburg Jr. for his care and support.

The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to Dr. Saeed Zaidi and the physicians and staff at Washington Hospital Center, as well as to the compassionate team at Frederick County Hospice, for their outstanding care, kindness, and support throughout Susan’s illness.

Susan’s life was defined by her dedication to education, her devotion to her students and athletes, and her gentle, generous spirit. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, colleagues, and the many lives she touched throughout her teaching and coaching career.

The family will receive friends from 4pm to 7pm, on Tuesday, November 11, 2025 at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick. The funeral service will be at 11am, on Wednesday, November 12, 2025 at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
