Teena L. Broadrup, age 77, died at Somerford Memory Care Unit on February 13, 2026. She succumbed to dementia caused by Alzheimer’s disease after six years.
Teena had a 35-year career in education with special emphasis in program administration and curriculum development, including parent/child education, family literacy and early childhood education.
Teena was born and raised in Frederick, Maryland. She graduated from Frederick High School in 1966, then graduated from Shepherd College in 1970 with a B.A. in Elementary Education. At Shepherd, she served as Society President of Sigma Sigma Sigma. She received an M.Ed. in Elementary Education from Frostburg University in 1976 and completed a post-Master’s certification program in Early Childhood Education from Hood College in 1987.
Teena was a classroom elementary teacher with Frederick County Public Schools from 1972 to 1979. She became a teacher in the Parent/Child program through Frederick County Public Schools Adult Education from 1980 to 1982. Realizing the need for quality pre-schools, she founded, became the first director and taught at the Wee Folk School associated with Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frederick from 1984 to 1993. Wee Folk School became the first Maryland State Department of Education accredited pre-kindergarten/kindergarten school in Frederick city.
In 1992, she returned to the Adult Education Department of Frederick County Public Schools as a Parent/Child Specialist. In 1996 she became Director of the Even Start Project until her retirement from education in 2008.
In her educational efforts, she was recognized for her design and implementation of Child/Parent Programs for Frederick County Public Schools by Harvard Graduate School in 1995 as a “national model program.” As Wee Folk School founder and director, the school was recognized by Maryland State Department of Education as an “exemplary pre-school for Maryland in the fields of developmental education and promotion of the arts for the young child.” The Even Start program which Teena designed and administered for Frederick County Public Schools was recognized as a “model program” by the Maryland State Department of Education.
Outside of her professional and educational responsibilities, Teena believed in community service. Below is a partial list of programs she participated in:

Teena enjoyed doing personalized arts and crafts, traveling, sailing the Chesapeake Bay and cruising international waters.
Teena will be dearly missed by her family, friends and past students. Her life will live on in their hearts and minds. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Dr. Fred Broadrup, her son C. Ward Broadrup and granddaughter Lila Elizabeth Broadrup. She is also survived by a brother, Charles Lakel of Colorado.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2026 in the chapel at Homewood Retirement Community, 7407 Willow Road, Frederick, Maryland 21702. Family and friends are invited to join us.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Teena and Fred Broadrup Scouting Fund c/o Frederick County Community Foundation at 312 East Church Street, Frederick, Maryland 21701.
