Stan grew up in Carlisle, PA and graduated from Carlisle High School, class of 1946. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1950 from Dickinson College. He received his Masters of Science in Microbiology from Georgetown University.

Stan was called to serve in the U.S. Army after graduation from Dickinson and became stationed at Camp Detrick. Stan married Connie in 1950 and after his service, they moved to Frederick where Stan remained at Fort Detrick as a microbiologist with the federal government in Biological Warfare. Stan and his branch worked to produce cell lines that would increase production of certain agents being studied by other groups. This led to the development of a special media that would allow high cell growth. Stan was a published author of many scientific papers, as were many of those who worked with him, including many GIs. Upon closure of Biological Warfare, Ft. Detrick was ordered to be a National Cancer Research Center and Stan became the second person to sign with the contractor Linton Biologics and was a major player in producing Epstein-Barr Virus to be studied by researchers in Burkett's Lymphoma, Hodgkin's Lymphoma, and Nasal Pharyngeal Sarcoma. Stan returned to the federal government to work for NIH in Bethesda before returning to Ft. Detrick where he oversaw the development of the P4 facility that was active with early AIDS research. He retired in 1986 to care for his wife, Connie.

Stan was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, American Legion Post #11, the National Republican Party, Sigma Xi Research Society, Dickinson Alumni, and Georgetown Alumni. A do-it-yourselfer, Stan designed and built the family home with his own hands where family and friends were always welcome. The family visited all 50 states, camping through the 49 continental states, Canada, and Mexico.

Stan was a very knowledgeable but humble man, an active family patriarch and will be lovingly remembered for his gentle and generous nature.
