Our History

Founded in 1848 by John Garrison Etchison, the firm now known as Keeney & Basford Funeral Homes began as M.R. Etchison & Son—a small but trusted funeral establishment serving downtown Frederick. Over the decades, the funeral home operated at various locations before settling into its permanent home at 106 East Church Street in 1939.

The building—known as the Trail Mansion—is an exceptional example of 19th-century Italianate architecture. Built in 1852 by Col. Charles E. Trail, it features finely crafted windows, ornate marble fireplaces, and intricate ceilings reminiscent of European estates of that era. Its character and beauty now serve as a dignified and comforting setting for funeral and memorial gatherings.

For nearly 125 years, the Etchison family oversaw the funeral home, supported by longtime associate Frank R. Smith. In 1971, ownership transitioned to Smith, along with Donald M. Fadeley, Robert W. Keeney, and Richard C.C. Basford—all of whom carried forward the values of compassion, service, and community dedication.

In 2007, longtime employees Rick Graf and Keith Roberson assumed ownership, preserving the funeral home’s longstanding commitment to the Frederick community. Leadership later transitioned again, but the mission remains the same: to provide exceptional service rooted in tradition, integrity, and care.

Today, Keeney & Basford Funeral Homes stands as the longest continually operating funeral home in Frederick County—a testament to its enduring legacy and the trust generations of families have placed in its care.
